Rune Raises $40M - They Place AI Compute on Solar Farms
Rune raised $40M to bolt modular AI compute directly onto solar farms, skipping years-long grid queues. It's the right-sizing model AIforE wants to see scale.

Rune raised a $40 million Series A led by Spark Capital to commercialize RELIC, a modular AI compute system deployed directly at solar farms instead of connected through the grid. Each module packs up to 1,024 GPUs with its own cooling and power management, and the company says setup takes about an hour, with workloads live within weeks — versus the years it typically takes an AI company to get a new grid interconnection.
The pitch: solar farms often generate more DC power at midday than the grid can absorb, and that excess gets curtailed and wasted. RELIC uses it on-site, skipping transmission lines and the AC/DC conversion equipment a conventional data center needs, which Rune says cuts auxiliary infrastructure costs by roughly 85 percent. "Every solar plant is a latent data center," CEO William Layden said. Rune has already deployed RELIC at a 200-megawatt Texas solar site and plans to expand to wind farms next.
This is the kind of right-sizing AIforE wants to see more of: instead of building new transmission lines and new gas plants to chase AI's power hunger, put the compute where the clean power already exists, sized to what the site can actually supply. It's a live test of colocating compute with renewables rather than bolting energy on as an afterthought — worth watching to see whether the model holds up past its first deployment.
